At high school dances, I always thought that, if the DJ was smart, he would start with a song like “The Cha Cha Slide” – something that would make everyone move from their spots along the wall and take to the dance floor.
Not to say that a wedding reception is similar to a high school dance (although, maybe sometimes…), but I often think the same thing when I am at weddings.
Except, now, the new “Cha Cha Slide” seems to be “Runaround Sue.” At the last wedding I attended, the DJ opened the dancing with Dion’s doo-wop hit, and the floor was crowded within the first couple of chords.
From my place as an observer, here is the common trajectory of a wedding DJ’s playlist:
1. Opens the dance floor with “Runaround Sue.”
2. Continues with other classic pop hits, most likely including something by Michael Jackson.
